• Snow that fell overnight melted by Wednesday. Another round of storms will hit the region Thursday.

The second wave of winter storms will arrive in Carson City and Sierra regions Thursday night, bringing snow levels down to the valley floors through at least Saturday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch.

This stronger, colder storm is likely to produce additional periods of heavy snow in the Sierra with some snow accumulation, anywhere from a foot above 5,000 feet to 3 to 6 inches possible for lower elevations.

Showers may continue through Sunday, then conditions become much drier through Tuesday morning ahead of the next storm system. With a foot of snow in the Sierra from Wednesday’s storm, an additional 2 to 3 feet is possible above 7,000 feet, while some higher elevations could see up to 4 feet.

“The arriving storm is cold and wet. Will it surpass the amounts of the last storm? It is similar though there may be less accumulation,” said Alex Hoon, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

One difference with this storm is that the winds won’t be as strong, he said. Motorists can expect blowing snow conditions Thursday night in the Sierra and are advised not to travel during the peak of the storm. Friday morning may also cause issues for motorists with snow and icy roadways, he said.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute on Friday. Significant reductions in visibility are possible. Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
