The Carson City Historical Society presents an unforgettable evening exploring Carson City’s crucial role in one of the nation’s boldest experiments in communication — the Pony Express.

“Mail, Mochilas, and Miles” will be presented by local historians and modern Pony Express relay riders Petra Keller and Dee Beardsley, whose firsthand experience in contemporary re-rides brings extraordinary authenticity to the story. Together, they will guide audiences through the daring riders, rugged relay stations, and relentless miles that helped unite a nation in 1860–1861.

Before railroads stitched the West together and long before telephones or highways, the Pony Express placed Carson City directly on the line — a vital link in the race to connect East and West. Riders carried more than mail; they carried news of elections, legislation, personal letters, and the steady pulse of a growing democracy.

As part of the Historical Society’s ongoing commitment to preserving and interpreting the region’s heritage — and in alignment with Nevada’s participation in the America250 commemoration — this lecture highlights how communication, courage, and civic responsibility helped shape the American story.

Keller and Beardsley will share vivid accounts of relay logistics, the significance of the mochila system, the physical endurance required of riders, and Carson City’s strategic importance along the route. Their perspective as relay participants offers audiences not just history — but living history.

The lecture will be held Thursday, March 19th at 6:30 pm at the Carriage House of the Foreman-Roberts House Museum, 1207 North Carson Street, Carson City, Nevada 89701.

Tickets are free for Carson City Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. Reservations are required. Tickets may be reserved at CCHistorical.org or by calling 775-315-9111.
