With plans for a 207-unit apartment complex delayed for nearly two years, dirt is now beginning to turn on an empty 5-acre lot in the area of Washington and Stewart Streets in Carson City.

The property once housed the V&T Railroad engine shops before closing, with the historical shops being demolished in 1991. The property is owned by Las Vegas company KB Acquisitions, which bought it in 2022 for $3 million.

The company is building what it called “upscale rental residences” on the lot set between the streets of East William, North Plaza, East Washington and North Stewart. It is called the Altair apartments. Earth moving equipment began grading work in late January.

The property that makes up the project will consist of 207 units with a “full slate of amenities in keeping with its location in close proximity to the high employment base of the Nevada State Capitol,” according to a 2022 news release from Nevada Premier Commercial.

The project will consist of 7 studios, 121 one-bedroom apartments, and 79 two-bedroom apartments, along with 253 parking spaces in a combination of parking garage and ground level parking.

There will be a total of five residential buildings built at three stories each, including a loft level, clubhouse, fitness center, swimming pool and more.

Records show that in 1991, there was a discussion of a Phase 1 environmental review of the lot, which happened in 2010, said Andy Hummel, utility manager for Carson City Public Works.

In that review, where EPA was present, it was learned the owner of the property had done removal of an underground tank in 1991. With consultants and EPA present in 2010, they found nothing of concern in the excavated area during phase 1, documents show. It is unknown at this time whether a phase 2 was ever completed. A phase 2 was recommended but not required, documents show.

Construction was set to begin in 2023 and was to be completed by the end of 2024. However, with the delay it is unknown when it will be finished. Check back for updates.
