While relatively calm conditions will dominate the beginning of this week, changes around Carson City and Sierra regions may arrive by Thursday with more rain and snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say their confidence is increasing regarding a weak to moderate atmospheric river that will impact the area.
The system will begin with a period of gusty winds on Thursday with ridges seeing gusts near 100 mph and valleys up to 45 mph.
Forecasters say it may be a relatively warmer storm with snow levels of 7,000 feet to 8,000 feet Thursday afternoon falling to near Lake Tahoe level by Friday morning. This will be all rain for western Nevada but those with travel plans across the Sierra will likely encounter chain controls and traffic delays. Some increased flows in small creeks and streams can be expected.
Until them, calm conditions will continue through midweek as high pressure remains in control over the region, bringing cold valley lows and inversions to remain in place through Tuesday with inversions weakening by midweek.
