Carson City Sheriff’s Office is advising that scammers are exploiting online inmate search features and are contacting family members.

The scammers falsely claim they can assist in securing the release of loved ones and request payments to do so, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

As a reminder, people should remember:

— Legitimate inmate release processes never require direct payment to third parties.

— Verify all claims directly with the detention center or law enforcement agency in question.

— Do not share personal or financial information over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and report it to your local law enforcement agency. In Carson City, contact non-emergency dispatch at 775-887-2677 or the Sheriff’s Office at 775-887-2500. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from fraud.
