About a dozen military veterans and their families were honored Wednesday afternoon at Sierra Place Senior Living in Carson City by the state of Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NVDS) and the Municipality of Carson City.

NVDS Director Katherine Miller and Carson City Mayor presented certificates of appreciation and service pins to veteran residents of Sierra Place, located at 1111 W. College Parkway.

“We pride ourselves on being a veteran friendly community,” Mayor Crowell said of the Nevada state capital. “We recognize the service and the value of not only the veterans themselves, but also the family members and friends of the veterans who kept the home fires burning. In Carson City, your veteran service, your service to a veteran is deeply appreciated.”

Wednesday’s recognition ceremony was part of “Veterans in Care,” an NVDS program that ensures veterans receive proper recognition for their military service.

“We are making it a point to reach out senior citizen communities to make sure we identify these veterans and thank them for their service,” said NVDS Deputy Director Wendy Simons.

Each veteran honored Wednesday at Sierra Place — many with service in World War II, Korea or Vietnam — received an individual certificate of appreciation award and a service pinned affixed on them personally by NVDS staff.

Family members were also honored Wednesday with service pins, recognizing their sacrifices to the service of their loved ones.

“We honor all the service of all the veterans of every era, of every war, and we especially honor the families,” Carson City Manager Nick Marano said. “A lot of people don’t recognize the sacrifices that a family makes when a veteran was deployed or off to war.”

One veteran, in particular, was given extra recognition Wednesday by Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office.

Phyllis Anker Bendure, 97, is a World War II U.S. Army Women’s Auxilliary Corps (WAC) veteran, who was the governor’s special guest at his State of the State Address earlier this month before the Nevada Legislature.

Sandoval had reached out to her this week with a signed photograph of the two at the Nevada Legislature along a personalized letter expressing his gratitude for Bendure’s service.
