By Denise Clodjeaux — Carson City Fire Department’s Deputy Emergency Manager Jon Bakkedahl will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend the luncheon which takes place Tuesday, Jan. 21 at noon, in the Brewery Art Center’s Grand Ballroom.
Bakkedahl will explain how to create a personal disaster plan and emergency kit, as well as how to execute the plan should a disaster strike.

“Everyone should have plan, which includes evacuation routes, meet-up locations, contents for a go bag, and considerations for medical needs,” Bakkedahl explains. “The reality is that you are your own first responder so being prepared is essential.”
He hopes the recent devastating fires in Southern California will encourage the public and government agencies to be more proactive when it comes to disaster preparedness.
He adds that thinking “it can’t happen here” can lead to the wrong outcome.
“Optimism bias is real and creates over confidence. I explain to people the hazards, the threats that they pose, and the risks associated with their own capabilities and responder capabilities.”
The Brewery Arts Centers is located at 449 West King Street, Carson City. Attendees will also learn about local emergency notification systems and disaster recourses in our area. Anyone interested in attending should email carsoncitynvrotary@gmail.com
