By Bridget Gordon-Johnson, CHS Counselor — Angel Vega Alvarez is the kind of student who leaves a lasting impression on everyone he meets, which is why Carson High School is proud to honor him as this week’s Senior in the Spotlight.
Humble, hardworking and always ready with a warm smile, Angel is a standout at Carson High School, admired by peers, teachers and staff alike. He is not just an exceptional student, but he is also a compassionate leader, a gifted photographer and a committed athlete.
Angel’s academic achievements are remarkable. Ranked in the top 10% of his highly competitive senior class, he holds a 4.5 GPA and is ranked 31 out of 541 students. Despite his impressive academic standing, Angel remains grounded, placing greater pride in his creative pursuits. As a completer in the CHS Photography program, he has won numerous awards for his work and serves as a mentor to younger students in the program.

This year, Angel’s capstone project focuses on capturing the humanity of Carson City’s unhoused population. Rather than immediately taking photos, Angel spent weeks building relationships with his subjects, ensuring that each image reflects their stories and dignity. This thoughtful and compassionate approach exemplifies his character, demonstrating a commitment to understanding and elevating others. You can see Angel’s work on his professional Instagram @byangelvega.
Beyond academics and photography, Angel is a leader on and off the field. He serves as a captain of the varsity soccer team and has participated in wrestling throughout high school, showing resilience despite injuries to his shoulder. Even in the face of physical challenges, Angel’s determination remains unwavering.
Angel’s journey is deeply rooted in his family’s story. A first-generation American, he carries forward his parents’ (Ariel and Veronica Vega Alvarez’s) values of kindness, hard work and sacrifice. His father, a roofer, once said, “I work long hours because I want my children to find a path that is not as hard and that results only in joy.” This commitment to creating a better future is evident in Angel’s own aspirations.
Looking ahead, Angel plans to pursue a college education where he can further his passion for photography, using his talent to illuminate important social issues. He has applied to programs in Montana, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, and Arizona and will rely heavily upon scholarships to make his final decision on which school he will attend. With his exceptional blend of intellect, creativity, and compassion, Angel Vega is poised to continue making a meaningful impact wherever life takes him.
