UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff’s Office has issued the following news release into the early Wednesday morning officer involved shooting.

On Tuesday evening, Dec. 31, 2024, at approximately 10:34 p.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a Verbal Domestic Dispute at the 4000 block of Old Clear Creek Road, in rural southwestern Carson City.  Deputies arrived at the address at approximately 10:50 p.m. and were informed by witnesses that the suspect was not on the property but had made threats via txt messages that if law enforcement made contact with him, he was going to “shoot it out”.

At approximately 11:54 p.m., the suspect returned to the area.  Deputies attempted contact with the suspect on Old Clear Creek Road, a short distance away from the residence where the domestic dispute had taken place.  There was an immediate exchange of gunfire and the suspect barricaded himself at his pickup truck.  Additional assistance law enforcement and medical teams responded to the area, including Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Washoe Tribal Police, Carson City Fire Department and Tactical Paramedics.

From 11:55 p.m. to 12:15 a.m., Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect from a distance, but the barricaded suspect refused all instructions.  At approximately 12:17 a.m., the suspect emerged from his barricaded vehicle position reportedly armed with a handgun and a second shooting took place.  Tactical Paramedics attempted to render immediate medical aid to the suspect but determined he was dead at the scene.  No other injuries were reported.  The suspect was released to the Carson City Coroner for transfer to the Washoe County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

In accordance with previously established Officer Involved Shooting protocol, the Nevada State Investigations Division assumed investigative responsibility for the criminal investigation, while the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducts its own internal affairs investigation into the matter.

Sheriff Ken Furlong stated that five Deputies and two Sergeants were placed on standard Administrative Leave following the shooting.  None of the officers were injured in the incident.

The identities of the suspect and involved Deputy Sheriffs are not being released at this time.
