Senator Square: Destination unknown is theme of Carson High School's 2021 Winterfest

Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

Scientists keep watch on climate and weather as drought grips Nevada

RENO — With much of the State of Nevada listed as in extreme drought, Nevadans are facing forecasts for a mild winter, with little precipitation since the rainy season started. With these designations, southern Nevadans are facing a mild and dry winter and northern Nevadans are looking at an uncertain forecast. All could face water restrictions, crop or pasture loss and, with exceptional drought, water shortage emergencies.

Carson City Democrats Donate Funds to Toys for Tots

On Friday, December 18, 2020, the Carson City Democrats delivered $686 to Joyce Buckingham, coordinator at Ron Wood Family Center for the Carson City Toys for Tots program.

In recognition of the fact that many families in our community, especially those with children, are struggling in this holiday period, the Carson City Democrats conducted a blazingly fast appeal to its members to support a cash drive for the Toys For Tots program.

Carson City is pleased to offer Christmas Tree Recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management, Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the drop off locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. This program continues to be a huge success.

Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases prior to recycling; if the tree is longer than six feet, cut the tree into pieces.

Carson City Health and Human Services offers COVID-19 holiday celebration guidance for Quad counties

As the risk for COVID-19 transmission continues to increase, Carson City Health and Human Services is encouraging residents to avoid attending or hosting holiday celebrations with those outside of your household and utilizing lower risk activities to celebrate the holiday with those outside of your household.

Northern Nevada professional Peter Williamson re-elected to NCET board

Peter Williamson has been re-elected to the board of directors of NCET, a member-supported non-profit that produces educational and networking events to help people explore businesses and technology.

He has served eight years on the NCET board and is the longest-serving volunteer director of the organization.

Williamson, re-elected as vice president of Tech Wednesdays, has worked for 15 years as an ActionCOACH business coach in Reno. He is also a Certified Exit Planner (CExP) with the Business Exit Institute, helping business owners plan their exit from their businesses.

CASA of Carson City receives corporate donation from Casey Neilon accounting firm

CASA of Carson City received an early holiday gift from Casey Neilon, an accounting firm with offices in Reno and Carson City, in the form of a sizeable donation.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, provides quality court-appointed advocacy for abused and neglected children in child welfare cases, through a network of community volunteers who work with children to ensure their voices are heard during court proceedings.

Carson City Parks and Recreation seeks snowshoe volunteers for upcoming season

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is looking for adults interested in volunteering to assist leading snowshoe trips.

The department is hoping to offer at least a couple trips each month while there is snow on the ground.

Donations sought, hotline established for Carson City region's Toys for Tots campaign

A hotline for Toys for Tots will soon be available for Carson City, Douglas, Storey and West Lyon County families in need of toys for the holidays.

Carson City Board of Supervisors approve third settlement regarding Camp Carson molestation

During the Thursday meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a $125,000 settlement demand was approved by the Board in regards to the alleged molestation of a five-year-old child who was, at the time, enrolled at Camp Carson.

"Feliz NaviDAD" and "Once Upon a Main Street" filmed in various locations around Carson City and in Douglas County and are set to premiere on Lifetime on Nov. 21 and Nov. 29, respectively.

Senator Square: Carson High students compete in organ, tissue donor art competition

Be a part of bringing hope by voting on contestant art pieces to decide the “Social Media Fave” in the Donor Network West annual art contest. Four Carson High students, Anthony Larry, Connor Lampert, Danielle Van Dusen, and Sarai Jauregui Rivas made the first cut, though all of CHS Graphic Design Instructor Patricia Ababio’s students submitted entries.
