Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several events have instituted safety measures set by the state and Center for Disease Control to keep participants safe during these times.

Carson City Schools launches Summer Learning Resources for parents, families

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the launch of several Summer Learning Resources for parents and families. The goal of continuing summer learning is to help students stay fresh academically, build upon what they've already learned and prepare for the next school year and grade-level.

Applicants sought for Carson City Library Board of Trustees position

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Library Board of Trustees. There is currently one open position for a four-year term that will end in June 2024.

Summer youth activities in Carson City feature reading challenge, camps and more

Join Patchwork Giraffe virtually to learn how to sew a face mask. This class does require you to have access to a sewing machine at home.

Carson City Library welcomes back patrons in Monday opening

After nearly 2-1/2 months of being closed due to COVID-19, the Carson City Library reopened Monday with patrons perusing and checking out books, ebooks and audiobooks from the library’s OverDrive collection.

As a digital media teacher at Carson High School I asked my students if they wanted to do a year in review video. Nick Baggio, who is an editor for the announcements, and Gianna Johnson, who is an anchor on the daily announcements, jumped right on the project.

Carson City Library reopening Monday with reduced hours

On Monday the Carson City Library is reopening to the public with the hours of 1-6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Curbside pick-up service will continue to be available 10 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday.

“We’re thrilled to be able to welcome the community back to the library,” said Tod Colegrove, director of the Carson City Library. “Because of the governor’s directive and to ensure everyone stays as safe as possible, we’ve had to limit hours and staffing. We’ll also still have curbside pick-up for those who might be hesitant to come into the public facility.”

Patt Quinn-Davis, Carson High School Language Arts teacher and adviser of the school newspaper and Carneta yearbook, is retiring. For Quinn-Davis, the publications staff became a part of her family every year and even more so when students stayed with the program throughout their high school careers.

Carson High School Announces Graduation Ceremony Plan for Class of 2020

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Carson High School’s graduation ceremony plan for the Class of 2020.

Carson High School will hold a drive-through ceremony Saturday, June 6, with varying times throughout the day where graduating seniors and their families will stay in their single vehicle until it's time for the graduate to exit their car, have their name announced on the loudspeaker as they walk across a stage erected on the northwest lawn (near the blue and white concrete ‘CHS’ sign), collect their diploma, have their picture taken, return to their vehicle and then proceed to the exit.

The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club.

Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.

This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.

Nevada State Public Health Lab director talks rapid testing, lab preparedness and more

With the deployment of Point of Care Machines and an expansion of recent efforts to manufacture collection kits to use in testing for COVID-19, The Nevada Independent once again talked with the director of the Nevada State Public Health Lab, Dr. Mark Pandori, to learn where the state is with its various testing efforts.

Lyon County implements diesel tax, votes down new subdivision

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the 2020-2021 county’s Tentative Budget on April 1, 2020. The County Manager and Comptroller have recommended the budget with no salary increases and a projected 6.6% ending fund balance which is lower than the 16.67% authorized by Nevada Revised Statutes.

The County Manager also recommended that the Board not fund any of the 35.8 positions requested by the various departments including:

24 Personnel for the Sheriff’s Office
1 Information Systems Technician
1 Community Development Director
1 Public Works Director

CARSON CITY — In today’s new coronavirus, COVID-19, world of home-based work and child education, many are turning to online resources to keep diverse age groups engaged.

Carson City's Sena Loyd announces candidacy for Assembly District 40

On Friday, March 13, Carson City resident Sena Loyd filed as a candidate for State Assembly District 40. Loyd, 36 and a registered Democrat, is an information professional currently working in the high-tech industry. Previously she served as the Library Director for the Carson City Library from 2014-2019.

Carson City Library closed in response to coronavirus concerns

UPDATE TUESDAY: In response to health concerns from COVID-19 and recommendations from the governor's office, the Carson City Library is closed until April 6 or until the State Medical Officer evaluates the public health risk and determines it is safe to resume normal operations. All homebound service and outreach activities are suspended.
