Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several events have instituted safety measures set by the state and Center for Disease Control to keep participants safe during these times.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the launch of several Summer Learning Resources for parents and families. The goal of continuing summer learning is to help students stay fresh academically, build upon what they've already learned and prepare for the next school year and grade-level.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Library Board of Trustees. There is currently one open position for a four-year term that will end in June 2024.

Summer is in full swing, and recreational activities around Carson City are starting to return in the near future.

From the Carson City Library’s 2020 Learning Challenge, to archery classes at the Clear Creek Bowman Archery Camp, there are several ways for youth to get outside and enjoy the Silver State.

Join Patchwork Giraffe virtually to learn how to sew a face mask. This class does require you to have access to a sewing machine at home.

After nearly 2-1/2 months of being closed due to COVID-19, the Carson City Library reopened Monday with patrons perusing and checking out books, ebooks and audiobooks from the library’s OverDrive collection.

While reading is usually its own reward, patrons who take part in the Carson City Library's 2020 Summer Learning Challenge will also be earning raffle tickets as they lose themselves in a good book, peruse the daily paper or attend a virtual program.

Between the three of them, they have worked more than 70 years in faculty and administrative faculty positions at Western Nevada College.

As a digital media teacher at Carson High School I asked my students if they wanted to do a year in review video. Nick Baggio, who is an editor for the announcements, and Gianna Johnson, who is an anchor on the daily announcements, jumped right on the project.

On Monday the Carson City Library is reopening to the public with the hours of 1-6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Curbside pick-up service will continue to be available 10 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday.

“We’re thrilled to be able to welcome the community back to the library,” said Tod Colegrove, director of the Carson City Library. “Because of the governor’s directive and to ensure everyone stays as safe as possible, we’ve had to limit hours and staffing. We’ll also still have curbside pick-up for those who might be hesitant to come into the public facility.”

The Carson City Library hosts weekly virtual family story-time. This is for PRE-K children (not yet in elementary school) and families: Join us for weekly themed stories and crafts. Craft instructions and additional resources, including activities for older children who may be at home, will be included. Carson High School is pleased to announce individuals who have excelled in their positions as Educational Support Professionals and have been recognized for their works of merit by their peers and coworkers. The ESP employees from CHS are those individuals who enable teachers to focus on the teaching of their students, and every teacher knows that without them, a school could not hope to function.

Carson High School is pleased to announce underclassmen (grades 9, 10 and 11) may come to the school and return educational materials (belonging to the school) and retrieve personal items Thursday, June 4.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education is pleased to announce a READ Nevada summer reading partnership with Renaissance, the Nevada State Library, and local public libraries.

Patt Quinn-Davis, Carson High School Language Arts teacher and adviser of the school newspaper and Carneta yearbook, is retiring. For Quinn-Davis, the publications staff became a part of her family every year and even more so when students stayed with the program throughout their high school careers.

Sena Loyd, primary candidate for the Nevada State Assembly, District 40, will be the featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon. Sena is best known for her years of exemplary service as Carson City's library director, in recognition of which she was named 2017 Nevada Librarian of the Year. She now serves as Director of Research and Workforce Development at Blockchains, LLC.

The Carson Educational Support Association would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring and donating to our educational support staff banquet. Although the banquet was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic, prizes have been given to the CESA members who won Classified of the Year.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Carson High School’s graduation ceremony plan for the Class of 2020.

Carson High School will hold a drive-through ceremony Saturday, June 6, with varying times throughout the day where graduating seniors and their families will stay in their single vehicle until it's time for the graduate to exit their car, have their name announced on the loudspeaker as they walk across a stage erected on the northwest lawn (near the blue and white concrete ‘CHS’ sign), collect their diploma, have their picture taken, return to their vehicle and then proceed to the exit.

And there's the collaboration between UNR and UNLV as well as the Carson City Library, where 3-D printers are being used to make the nasal swabs ...

In an effort to help support the state’s healthcare workers and first responders, the Nevada Franchised Auto Dealers Association and its southern chapter, Southern Nevada Franchised New Car & Truck Dealer Association, have donated a combined $100,000 to the state’s COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

It took just one call from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and Carson City Department of Health and Human Services to Tod Colegrove, PhD, MSLIS, director of the Carson City Library, and the wheels were set in motion.

Happening now through April 25 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club.

Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.

This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.

With the deployment of Point of Care Machines and an expansion of recent efforts to manufacture collection kits to use in testing for COVID-19, The Nevada Independent once again talked with the director of the Nevada State Public Health Lab, Dr. Mark Pandori, to learn where the state is with its various testing efforts.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the 2020-2021 county’s Tentative Budget on April 1, 2020. The County Manager and Comptroller have recommended the budget with no salary increases and a projected 6.6% ending fund balance which is lower than the 16.67% authorized by Nevada Revised Statutes.

The County Manager also recommended that the Board not fund any of the 35.8 positions requested by the various departments including:

1 Public Works Director

The Carson City Library is continuing to offer a busy spring with a selection of online events taking place in April in honor of National Poetry Month, Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, STEAM and more.

CARSON CITY — In today’s new coronavirus, COVID-19, world of home-based work and child education, many are turning to online resources to keep diverse age groups engaged.

One of the most extensive sources of online materials is based right here at the Carson City Library, offering a collection of online resources from audiobooks to adult learning and picture books to magazines.

On Friday, March 13, Carson City resident Sena Loyd filed as a candidate for State Assembly District 40. Loyd, 36 and a registered Democrat, is an information professional currently working in the high-tech industry. Previously she served as the Library Director for the Carson City Library from 2014-2019.

UPDATE TUESDAY: In response to health concerns from COVID-19 and recommendations from the governor's office, the Carson City Library is closed until April 6 or until the State Medical Officer evaluates the public health risk and determines it is safe to resume normal operations. All homebound service and outreach activities are suspended.
