Escaped! As the June 7th, 2026 witching hour drew to a close, Carson City’s Asa Morway and 1,500+ cohorts were guided onto buses waiting along San Francisco’s Marina Green. Their next destination was Pier 3, approximately 2 miles to the east, where a brief transfer would usher all passengers onto a ferry bound for the Bay’s infamous Alcatraz Island.
Thankfully, this is not a story about “what might have been” had a few reckless decisions been averted. Rather, this is a tale of what was about to be. The ferry never docked at Alcatraz, nor did it return to the mainland with its human cargo. Instead, all souls aboard plunged into the frigid waters southwest of Alcatraz to begin plying their way back toward Marina Green where their bikes and running shoes awaited. This was the 40th edition of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon!

A lottery system helped whittle the pool of 12,000 applicants down to a field of 1,500 ironmen and ironwomen (plus another 250 relay teams). On race day, athletes from 68 different countries boarded the ferry to escape Alcatraz.
Competing in the men’s 18-19 year old division, Asa completed the 1.5 mile swim, 18 mile bike, and 8 mile run in 2 hours and 42 minutes, quick enough to secure the division’s top step on the podium. Asa’s escape benefited from his time swimming with the Carson Tigersharks and biking with the Kit Carson Youth Cycling program.
