Clean Up the Lake, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has removed 8,183 pounds of trash from Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe.

Beginning in July 2020, the Clean Up The Lake dive teams completed a circumnavigated SCUBA clean up of Donner Lake, covering every inch of the 8 mile shoreline at depths of 0-25 feet removing all the smaller trash they could find that resulted in 5,151.5 pounds of trash removed from Donner Lake compared to 3,032 pounds of trash removed from the depths of Lake Tahoe.

Partnership Carson City, founded to develop a healthy community, and other partners are educating the community about how to safely dispose of prescription drugs this Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at Smith's Food and Drug Store, located at 599 E William St. Additionally, Partnership will have a collection box for safe disposal of sharps (syringes) and providing free Deterra Bags for safe-at-home disposal and lockboxes for storage.

CARSON CITY — Children who would have received free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program have received a one-time refund for the cost of school lunches that were missed this spring due to COVID-related school closures.

Carson City Health and Human Services will be combining drive-thru COVID-19 testing and flu vaccination events for Quad County residents in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties. The meaning and symbolism of objects found on a traditional Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Museum Curator of Education Mina Stafford will deliver the program on this uniquely Mexican holiday and how it has evolved over time. Also at the event, the museum will announce plans for this year’s Dia de Los Muertos celebration.

DeBug Computer is hosting its annual Community Shredding Day event on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon in Carson City and 1 to 3 p.m. in Minden. The event is free of charge and is designed to help protect against identity theft by shredding sensitive documents or obsolete computers and technology.

Mile High Jazz Band Association continues the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival’s series of live-streamed, streamed, and virtual events through September. The next event, on Sunday, September 13, features Niall McGuinness & the New World Jazz Project playing soul, Latin, and world jazz from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The five-piece band, including reeds, keyboard, bass, drums, and percussion, will be live-streamed from Empire Ranch Golf by A to Zen Media.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced Thursday an additional extension for expired or soon-to-be expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and new, limited Saturday hours for new Nevada residents. The DMV is continuing to find new ways to serve the public while operating under COVID-19 safety protocols.
