University of Nevada, Reno to host Bill Nye The Science Guy

The public is invited to be entertained and educated with Bill Nye the Science Guy Sept. 6, the first of several presentations in the annual Discover Science Lecture Series at the University of Nevada, Reno. The College of Science and Associated Students of the University of Nevada are bringing Nye to the University’s Lawlor Events Center at 7 p.m. All tickets are $5 per person, available through the Lawlor box office.

“ASUN has a new focus of bringing large-scale events to campus that attract not only students but the community at large,” Huili Weinstock, ASUN president said. “Bill Nye is a great start as he’s popular and people of all ages enjoy his live show.”

Nye speaks on a variety of subjects including planetary science, environmental issues, climate change, and his own experiences as "The Science Guy." He has spent most of his life making science and technology entertaining and accessible. Combining his talents as a scientist, inventor, comedian, and author, he has attracted adults and children to the wonders of science. Nye's wit and enthusiasm have helped to garner 18 Emmy awards for his PBS/syndicated series Disney Presents Bill Nye the Science Guy.

“Bill’s mission to make science accessible and entertaining is our goal with the Discover Science Lecture Series...well, maybe not so much entertaining as accessible, and Bill is definitely entertaining,” Jeff Thompson, dean of the College of Science said. “We think the community will enjoy and learn from his presentation and are using Lawlor Events Center so we have room for everyone.”

The Bill Nye production kicks off the annual Discover Science Lecture Series, which again brings some of the world’s leading scientists to the Reno-Sparks community to share their knowledge.

“Science encompasses a wonderfully diverse collection of explorations into the unknown,” Thompson, said. “Come and experience the universe of science as the best scientists on the planet visit Nevada for our Discover Science Lecture Series.”

Among the many renowned scientists from around the country who the College of Science has brought to the Reno-Sparks community for the lecture series are anthropologist Anna Roosevelt, physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Nobel Laureate and physicist Eric Cornell, chemist and green energy expert Harry Gray and Jeff Lieberman, musician, artist, researcher and host of “Time Warp” on the Discovery Channel.

This year, the Discover Science Lecture Series will bring evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers of Rutgers University on Oct. 16; Douglas Smith, Yellowstone Wolf Project Director Dec. 6 and Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics from City College of New York City Feb. 7.

For the Bill Nye event, there is free parking in the West Stadium Parking complex at the 17th Street entrance to the campus.
