NHP identifies Reno man in fatal motorcycle crash; Subaru driver involved doesn't stop
A 51-year-old Reno man, Stephen L. Hobbs, man has been identified in the fatal motorcycle crash that happened Saturday on Highway 395 near Cold Springs. The driver of the car that hit the rider fled the scene, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
According to NHP Trooper Dave Gibson, the crash happened just after the noon hour. The preliminary investigation details indicate a black 2007 KTM sport bike ridden Hobbs was traveling northbound on Highway 395 next to a possible silver or blue 2000 or newer Subaru WRX, hatchback style, also traveling northbound. An independent witness states that the Subaru came into the motorcycles travel lane and struck it causing it to crash.
Hobbs was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained critical injuries as a result, said Gibson. Mr. Hobbs was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the collision. The driver of the vehicle involved continued northbound on US 395. Mr. Hobbs was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno where he died at approximately
5:55 p.m. Saturday.
Northbound travel lanes were shut down with traffic control directed by NDOT for about an hour while the crash scene was diagrammed and investigated. At that time one lane was opened up for northbound traffic. This area of Highway 395 is two lanes in each direction, a center median and an off ramp to Cold Springs. The speed limit is 65 mph.
The crash remains under investigation and authorities are still looking for the driver of the Subaru.
