Names released of couple found in Carson River
Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong released details of the investigation of two bodies found Tuesday in the Carson River near Carson River Road. The victims were identified as Darrell Crossman, 53, and his wife Kelley Crossman, 43.
While the investigation continues, Furlong said that they suspect that one of the victims fell into the frigid water of the Carson River, and the other attempted a rescue, and both were overcome by hypothermia.
Here is the statement issued by Furlong:
At approximately 1:55 p.m. on January 10th, the Carson City Sheriff's Office was notified of the discovery of two dead bodies in the Carson River, approximately ½ mile South of Carson River Road. Deputies responded to the area and contacted a hiker who had discovered the victims. Both bodies were found in the shallow frigid water, measuring only a few feet deep and 34.8 degrees. A campsite and vehicle was located within the same proximity, as well as two small dogs. The deceased have been identified as Carson City residents, (husband/wife) Darrell Crossman, 1/15/1958, and Kelley Crossman, 5/25/1968. Neither was employed and resided locally with other family members. Following a registration check of the vehicle, investigators were able to contact next of kin shortly after the discovery.
On January 11th, an autopsy was performed by the Washoe County Medical Examiners Office. The examination disclosed no significant injury or trauma to either victim. Final findings from the autopsy are pending toxicology reports. Investigators completed search and evidence recovery activities at the camp site early today. During a review, they determined that there was no evidence of any struggle or foul play in the area.
The couple was last seen by family members Sunday, January 7th, but had not been reported missing. The Crossman's apparently drove to the river and set up a small camping area, placing their bedding location immediately near the water. Family members became concerned about their whereabouts by Tuesday, but were unable to locate them (by cell phone). The camp site area examination has suggested only a small warming fire and quilt/pillow bedding. Mrs. Crossman's shoes were located on the river bank, while Mr. Crossman was wearing his. No personal property was identified as missing.
While this investigation remains open, investigators believe this tragic incident may ultimately be the result of an accidental entry into the water by one of the victims and a rescue effort by the other. In this case, after entering the water, the combined frigid air and water temperature for any amount of time would have placed both victims in immediate life-threatening peril.
