Northern Nevada backyards and gardens: Prepare now to manage weeds
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 02/11/2024 - 6:33pmAlthough gardeners love plants, few of us love weeds. Although it seems absurd to talk about weeds while there is snow on the ground, the Boy Scouts say, “Be Prepared!” If you want to do less pulling or hoeing of weeds in spring and summer, consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide relatively soon.

Northern Nevada landscapes and backyards: USDA planting zones updated
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 02/04/2024 - 1:44pmThese warmer days have me hankering for gardening. Although I received a small hydroponic unit as a Christmas present, I don’t think a 7-inch by 14-inch lighted box is going to satisfy my yearning for spring and being outside with my plants. I decided the least I could do was write about gardening!

Low-lying fog
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 01/29/2024 - 9:43amI take my dog for a walk every morning, right before the sun comes up, and the other day I saw an unusual sight so I went back and got my camera. There was a low-lying fog on the ground all around where I lived. It covered the part of Dayton where the golf course is and the schools. It covered the area where the old section of town is, it was all around me, but it wasn’t where I was standing (near Pioneer Crossing Casino)… and it never did come into my area. I’ve lived here 13 years and I’ve never seen that before.

Note the linear form of the fence, the road and ruts in snow....then there's the last 3/4 of the sun setting over the mountains to the west. Great composition.
