Carson City area weather: Thick wildfire smoke to continue for the next few days
Wildfire smoke throughout Carson City and much of western Nevada will continue to remain locked into the region for the next few days, due to the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County and the Dixie Fire burning near Susanville, according to the National Weather Service.
As of Sunday morning 7 a.m., the airnow.gov Air Quality Index readings of "hazardous" in South Lake Tahoe and Reno, "very unhealthy" in Carson City and Dayton and "unhealthy for sensitive groups" in Minden and Gardnerville. These readings are updated hourly and are expected to change.
Due to the shift in the winds back to a west to southwest direction, smoke and degraded air quality impacts will continue across the Sierra into western Nevada, according to weather service. Specifically Susanville, Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Truckee are likely to see the greatest smoke impacts due to this wind shift, with forecasters anticipating prolonged periods with smoke and haze this week.
Mild summer temperatures with the typical afternoon and evening breezes are expected through the middle of next week. Highs will range in the mid to high 80s for lower valley areas and mid-70s to low-80s for Sierra locations. Some colder mountain valley locations will experiences overnight lows in the high-30s and 40s by mid-week. No rain is in sight through the week.
