Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury running for re-election
CARSON CITY — District Attorney Jason Woodbury announced today he is running for re-election. Woodbury is finishing a second term following his election in 2014 and re- election in 2018.
“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity Carson City voters provided me when they hired me for this job,” Woodbury said. “We’ve assembled a strong team of men and women who serve this community well.”
Woodbury, 49, said public safety is “obviously Job One” and referenced several successful prosecutions in support of his re-election bid, including his office’s role in the Wilber Martinez-Guzman case involving the murder of four people in Gardnerville and Washoe Valley.
“Some crimes transcend jurisdictional borders, and this was surely one of them. Even though he didn’t kill anyone here, we quickly charged him with multiple felonies related to the murders. This got him off the streets and allowed Washoe and Douglas counties time and space to complete their murder investigations in a methodical way. I’m gratified we were able to help bring this individual to justice and give our community some peace of mind after several nerve-wracking days and nights during this episode.”
Martinez-Guzman is scheduled to be sentenced on the murders and eight additional felonies in Carson City in early March.
Woodbury also cited the 2020 coroner’s inquest into the death of Clint Malone as an important accomplishment. Malone was stabbed to death inside a Carson City apartment by the resident of the apartment. The coroner’s jury determined the killing was justified as self-defense.
“That was the first coroner’s inquest here in decades, and it’s a procedure we plan to utilize in the future,” Woodbury said. “An inquest allows my office to present a full picture of the evidence in an open, public, 100 percent transparent proceeding. The decedent’s family and loved ones can see for themselves what happened, and we can ask a neutral, independent body of citizens to determine whether the killing was lawful or unlawful. It’s a useful tool in our toolbox.”
Talking about a potential third term, Woodbury said his priorities include completing a comprehensive revision to the Municipal Code. “Carson City’s local ordinances are as much a part of our infrastructure as water lines and wastewater treatment facilities. We are cleaning up thousands of provisions to remove obsolete sections and simplify language. This project will clarify our ordinances and make them far more user-friendly for the people and businesses in our community,” said Woodbury.
Woodbury and his wife, Stacy, have two children attending middle school in Carson City. Woodbury’s stepson, Noah Jennings, was recently honorably discharged from the Nevada Army National Guard after 6 years of service and lives with his wife, Maggy, in Maryland.
