While the snow didn’t come over Christmas, it did arrive before the new year. It is snowing in Carson City this morning, with around an inch or less (or more) on the ground around parts of town.

Snow showers will continue in Western Nevada this morning, heaviest from Reno through Minden/Gardnerville toward Hawthorne. Total snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is expected through the Reno/Carson City area with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville.

Locally higher amounts to 5 inches is possible south of Pyramid Lake. 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected west of highway 95 near Walker Lake and around Hawthorne. Expect winter driving conditions this morning. For the latest updates visit weather.gov/Reno.

Meanwhile, Carson City government officials, Parks and Recreation and Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, agreed Monday to open the Fuji Park Pavilion this week for the city’s homeless with critical needs.

Temperatures this week during the New Year’s holiday are anticipated to drop considerably, and officials believe this storm could pose a critical risk of life to many people who have no ability to provide their own shelter. FISH staff will manage and operate the emergency shelter, said Furlong. Temperatures are expected to be in the single-digits overnight this week with a windchill factor well below zero.

Carson City resident and Nevada Live Magazine online publisher Dana Lee Freund notes she spoke with FISH representatives who said the shelter needs hats, gloves, warm coats, can openers, and hygiene items like disposable razors, deodorant, and tooth paste/brushes. Items should be dropped off at the administration office which is adjacent to the Carson Thrift store, not Fuji Park.
