Western Nevada College

Northern Nevada high school robotics teams gathered at Western Nevada College in Carson City on Saturday, Sept. 7 for a kick-off event the 2013-2014 FIRST Tech Challenge.

FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a national organization that promotes science and technology to students grades 7-12. The kick-off event offered the opportunity for students to see the reveal of the 2013-2014 Tech Challenge game, network with other FTC teams and strategize about the new FIRST Tech Challenge season. Teams are tasked with designing, building and programming robots to compete in the challenge season.

FIRST NV’s underlying focus goes beyond creating these experiences for students to program, build, and compete in robotics challenges, but also inspires them to think about meaningful careers.

Dee Frewer, FIRST Nevada Board Member said, “It is a natural fit for WNC to provide the hands-on support, provide the prestige of a college setting and elevate the ‘mind support.”

FIRST relies on dedicated and skilled volunteers to carry out its mission. Western’s involvement in the FIRST Tech Challenge began two years ago when networking instructor Dave Riske volunteered his expertise as a field tech coadvisor.

Sherry Black, Academic Director of Career and Technical Education for WNC, said, “We are working on ways to provide a seamless path for students to attend WNC. Anytime we open our doors to high school students, we gain an opportunity to show our campus and our programs.”
