Around 100 demonstrators gathered Saturday morning at the Nevada State Capitol complex in Carson City as part of a nationwide vigil to honor lives lost by federal agents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions.
The non-partisan group Indivisible Carson City held its vigil from 9 to 11 a.m. to honor those killed or harmed by federal immigration agents and demanding justice for them.
The vigil Saturday in Carson City and nationwide centered on the deaths of Joan Sebastian Guerrero, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Keith Porter, Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Silverio Villegas González and Ruben Ray Martinez.
Among the demonstrators at Saturday’s vigil was Farrell Vaughn, a military veteran who is on the leadership team of Indivisible Nevada.
“This ICE-out demonstration is to raise awareness of the unlawful and unconstitutional actions of ICE and the Trump administration overall. They are violating the constitution, they are violating people’s rights, they are murdering people and they are not being held accountable for those actions,” he said.
There didn’t appear to be any counter-demonstrators at Saturday’s gathering. Supporters of the president’s policy for the expansion and operations of ICE argue the measures are to protect national security, public safety and the rule of law. Backers of the policy emphasize ICE is stopping cross-border crime, reducing illicit drug and human trafficking and preserving public resources.
Indivisible Nevada and Indivisible Carson City representatives say they will be holding more demonstrations in the coming weeks leading up to the midterm election.
