During October, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office received reports from eight scam victims, with a combined reported loss of approximately $129,818, according to a newly launched CCSO monthly alert on scam trends and the amount of dollars lost.

Recurring trends often involve scammers impersonating financial institutions, law enforcement, and service providers to pressure victims into sending money through bank transfers, gift cards or Bitcoin. Other common fraud reports included unauthorized credit card transactions, compromised accounts, and suspected card skimming.

Last week, CCSO fielded phone calls from alert citizens, warning them that they had been contacted via phone about missed jury duty and that the caller said they were from the sheriff’s office.

CCSO reminds residents to remain vigilant against potential scams and to never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud is encouraged to contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at (775) 887-2020, Carson City Dispatch non-emergency (775) 887-2008, or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900.

CCSO reminds citizens to protect themselves with these tips:

  • Never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.
  • Verify suspicious requests directly with the organization involved.
  • Remember, legitimate agencies will NOT demand immediate payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
