A sprinkler system that was activated by heat from a unattended stove caused significant water damage to an apartment unit early Monday morning, according to the Carson City Fire Department.

At 2:27 a.m. Carson City Fire Department responded to Bella Lago apartments in the 1600 block of Airport Road for a possible structure fire in one of the units.

Firefighters arrived and saw an activated water sprinkler but no fire.

According to CCFD Battalion Chief Brad Mihelic, an electric stove inside an empty apartment was left on and heated up enough to pop the sprinkler on, which activated a fire alarm.

Firefighters shut down the sprinkler, which caused significant water damage to the apartment, said Mihelic.
