International Expert in Reno for World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims
November 18 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Reno, Nevada – Fatal crashes in Washoe County are up 23% in the first half of 2025, and Nevada is recognized as one of the most dangerous states in the nation for people biking and walking. On Tuesday, November 18th, the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance (TMBA) is holding a free public eventhonoring those victims of road traffic violence to inspire action. Internationally renowned expert in roadway safety, Dr. Tara Goddard, will be at the Brewer’s Cabinet at 6 pm to discuss what can be done about the epidemic of traffic violence.
“Dr. Goddard’s expertise helps us understand how this public health crisis is the result of not just a few bad drivers but of a transportation system that does not prioritize safety,” said TMBA Board President Dr. Thomas Albright. “As a researcher in planning and engineering, Dr. Goddard has an inspiring slate of evidence-based solutions that we can act on to make our community safer.”
The event with Dr. Goddard is partly supported by donations from friends and loved ones of Susan Goodenow, who was killed this year by a motorist while bicycling in Pleasant Valley.
The World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Road Traffic aims to:
- remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads;
- acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services;
- draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries and advocate for an appropriately serious response;
- advocate for better support for road traffic victims and victim families;
- promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.
The community is invited to the Brewer’s Cabinet at 6 PM on Tuesday, November 18th, to remember victims, learn about the crisis and what can be done from Dr. Goddard, and to get involved and take action. RSVP is not required; however, TMBA is providing appetizers and offering a free beverage to the first 20 people who RSVP and arrive at the event. To RSVP, go to the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance Facebook page or email info@bikewashoe.org.
