By Don Vetter — Balancing Northern Nevada’s unique quality of life and community capacity with continued job and economic growth will be front and center at Western Nevada Development District’s annual summit taking place in Virginia City April 21-22.

WNDD, Nevada’s first federally designated Economic Development District, has been bringing together regional government and business leaders since 1983. This year’s event, themed “Building a Stronger Nevada” will provide attendees with a look into rural resources, federal, state and private funding opportunities, infrastructure solutions, and the Nevada Main Street program.

Chris Brandon, Executive Director of WNDD, stated: “This gathering brings together regional stakeholders to network, collaborate, and discuss strategies on issues impacting our economic growth and development. Ultimately, we want to foster partnerships that create an environment for sustainable regional growth.”

The Western Nevada Development District (WNDD) represents eight counties: Churchill, Douglas, Humboldt, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey, and Washoe; the consolidated municipality of Carson City; the cities of Fallon, Fernley, Lovelock, Reno, Sparks, Winnemucca, and Yerington; and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe; and Associate Members from business, industry, and non-profit organizations located within our 29,000 square mile region.

Summit Topics Include:

Rural Resources: Statewide programs and funding available to rural communities and how rural resources contribute to the overall economy.

Main Street America: Explore the success of Nevada rural and urban communities in accessing this program to date. Learn how to get involved, what the program means to your community and available opportunities.

Funding: Federal and State resources, grants, matching funds, and partnerships to build much needed infrastructure for regional growth.

Infrastructure: Nevada’s need to build adequate infrastructure (Transportation, Energy, Wastewater) to support continued growth.

WNDD’s mission is to create an environment within which business and industry can be recruited, promoting a vibrant, diverse and sustainable economy while also addressing community infrastructure capacity. As a federally designated Economic Development District, one of WNDD’s main missions is to update the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) annually and rewrite the plan every 5 years. The CEDS is a regionally driven economic development plan that encompasses the entire District.
