Gusty conditions with the potential of damaging winds are expected to arrive early Sunday in Carson City and surrounding counties, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning for the region.

The warning is from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas as well as southern Lyon, Mineral and Mono counties. Forecasters say southwest winds will be 25 to 40 mph gusting to 70 mph. Gusts more than 100 mph are expected for the Sierra ridges.

Forecasters advise damaging winds can blow down trees, power lines and cause widespread power outages. Travel during this duration will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles through Washoe Valley, and along Highway 395.

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as holiday decorations, patio furniture and trash cans. Forecasters suggest people have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and candles in the event of power outages.

Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for the greater Lake Tahoe area. Forecasters say to expect anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of snow with up to 8 inches above 7,000 feet west of Highway 89. Wind gusts up to 60 mph with ridge winds over 100 mph are possible.

Forecasters advise that travel could be very difficult over mountain passes as the strong winds expected could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines.

There’s a 30 percent chance of showers after 10 a.m. with snow levels 6,500 feet rising to 7,1000 feet in the afternoon.

Forecasters say it will be sunny through mid-morning Sunday with winds from the southwest, 30 mph to 40 mph with gusts as high as 55 mph. Sunday evening will be cloudy and cold with a low around 22. It will be breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph and gusts up to 30. Monday will bring mostly sunny skies and a high in the mid 40s. The forecast looks to be sunny and dry for the remainder of the week.
