Carson City Rotarians and the public will learn about the impact food dyes have on our long-term health at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. Featured speaker, Dr. Rebecca Bevans, will explain how those dyes hide in everyday products, especially in items marketed to kids.
The public is invited to attend the luncheon which takes place Tuesday, Dec. 9, at noon, in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 West King Street.
Along with explaining what these dyes are, Bevans will give examples of how the dyes impact health. “Removing dyes can lead to noticeable improvements, people need to know how to spot dyes on labels,” she explains. “That knowledge gives families practical tools for choosing safer alternatives.”
She will also explain why they are still being used, and why the U.S. lags far behind other countries that have already restricted or banned them. “The message is straightforward: once you know what these chemicals do, you can make simple changes that protect your family’s health and push for a food system that puts people first.”
Bevans is a cognitive neuroscientist and Professor of Psychology at Western Nevada College, and was featured in the documentary “To Die For” earlier this year. Her interest in synthetic food dyes began as a personal mission to help her son, an effort that ultimately led her to become a nationally recognized expert in the field.
