The holiday season is here, and with it comes the joy of giving, receiving, and unfortunately, an increase in  package thefts. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to take proactive steps to safeguard their  deliveries and ensure a safe and happy holiday season.

Porch pirates thrive during the holidays when package deliveries are at their peak. The Carson City Sheriff’s  Office is asking the community to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect their homes and deliveries from  theft.

To help reduce the risk of becoming a victim, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office recommends the following safety  tips:

1. Schedule Deliveries: Choose a delivery time when someone will be home to receive the package.

2. Use a Secure Location: Opt to have packages delivered to a secure location, such as a lockbox, a trusted neighbor’s home, or your workplace.

3. Track Your Packages: Utilize tracking services provided by carriers to monitor your deliveries and retrieve them promptly.

4. Install Security Measures: Consider installing a doorbell camera or home security system to deter potential thieves.

5. Request Signature Confirmation: Require a signature for deliveries to ensure packages aren’t left unattended.

6. Report Suspicious Activity: Be aware of unfamiliar vehicles or individuals following delivery trucks and report any suspicious behavior to the Sheriff’s Office.

During the holiday shopping season, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office also reminds residents to take precautions  to protect their vehicles and belongings. Always lock your vehicle when unattended and ensure that valuable  items or holiday packages are either hidden from view or removed altogether. Simple steps like these can  significantly reduce the risk of theft.
