A 36-year-old man was arrested Nov. 29 for suspicion of felony child neglect, eluding and other alleged offenses following a vehicle pursuit early Friday morning, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Brandon Brooks, listed from New Orleans, was taken into custody following an investigation. He was also booked for felony a destroying private property, gross misdemeanor failing to report a traffic accident and the following misdemeanor offenses: Reckless driving (wanton disregard) failure to maintain a lane, leaving the scene of an accident and DUI alcohol/drugs.

According to the booking report, at 2:05 a.m. a deputy patrolling the area near the roundabout on South Carson Street and Stewart Street observed a vehicle going southbound on Carson Street. The vehicle was traveling at such a high rate of speed the deputy was unable to identify the make and model of the vehicle.

The deputy attempted to catch up to the vehicle, activating their emergency lights. The officer observed the vehicle accelerate away from the deputy, reaching speeds of over 90 mph and bouncing between left and right lanes several times, the report states.

The speed limit on South Carson Street is 35 mph. As the vehicle failed to yield the deputy observed it go right at the intersection of Carson Street near the Fandango. The vehicle exited the roadway, traveled up the embankment, through the Marriott hotel sign and then damaged three other vehicles in the parking lot. The deputy noted that the traffic cameras captured this at the intersection. The footage was pulled and uploaded for evidence, the report states.

As a deputy pulled into the parking lot they observed a man running from the scene of the crash toward the parking garage behind the hotel. The officer observed a juvenile male standing next to the vehicle. The 12-year-old identified himself and confirmed the driver was the man who fled the scene, saying that he told him that the police were behind them and that the man, later identified as Brandon Brooks, would not stop.

Carson City Fire Department arrived on scene and took the juvenile to the emergency room at Carson Tahoe Hospital after he told personnel he was in pain. The juvenile appeared to be in a state of disbelief. The juvenile’s mother, who was not in the vehicle, was contacted and advised of the situation and taken to the hospital.

The driver, Brandon Brooks, was apprehended by a deputy near the parking structure on the west side of the hotel. He was taken to the hospital. He told deputies he ran because he thought he had warrants in Louisiana. While talking he stated he had been drinking and was drunk. Due to Brooks having just been in a car crash, field sobriety tests were not administered. The deputy read the man the request for evidentiary testing. He stated he had a drug and alcohol problem and submitted to a voluntary blood draw.

Suspect Brooks, on his own free will, stated he knew he should not have been driving and his wife had asked him not to go and get food. He stated that despite her warnings, he drove to a diner and ordered food anyway, according to the report.

In an interview with the juvenile, he stated he saw red and blue emergency lights and when he told Brooks about it, he said he was not stopping, the report states.

The arresting deputy is requesting the District Attorney’s Office review the case to see if charges should be filed against the mother for child abuse/neglect for knowingly allowing her 12-year-old son to be in a car with an intoxicated subject.

Bail: $30,000.
