For nearly a decade, St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School in Carson City has welcomed the community into a breathtaking display of faith, culture and Christmas tradition through its annual Night of Nativity Exhibit. What began as a small collection has grown into a heartfelt ministry, now featuring hundreds of nativity sets from around the world.

“For over 800 years, nativity sets have helped families bring the story of Christ’s birth into their homes,” explained creator, coordinator, and host Carolyn Schroder, who curates the exhibit each year. “The very first nativity, created by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223, invited people to truly see the humility, beauty, and wonder of that holy night. Our exhibit carries on that same spirit.”

Creches of every country, culture, style, and material are represented, each offering its own interpretation of the manger. But Schroder notes that one feature always captures the most attention: the students’ artwork.

“The student artwork is truly a standout,” she said. “It brings such life and joy to the exhibit. Visitors love seeing how children interpret the Nativity story through their own creativity, colors, and perspectives. It adds a sense of wonder that only young artists can offer.”

According to Schroder, this unique combination of global nativity sets and heartfelt student pieces creates an atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down and reflect.

“When people walk through the exhibit, there’s this beautiful sense of peace — almost a collective exhale,” she said.

The event is offered as a gift to the community, and guests of all ages are encouraged to attend.

“All are welcome,” Schroder emphasized. “Bring your family, bring your friends, and come experience the quiet joy of the manger with us.”
