An 18-year-old Carson City man faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening another man with a knife Sunday at Mills Park, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Samuel Mercado also faces misdemeanor charges, suspicion of making threats and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s being held on $21,774 bond.

According to the arrest report, officers met with a male subject who said he was having issues with his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, Samuel Mercado. The male said Mercado told him to meet him at Mills Park. He said the two began arguing, followed by pushing and that Mercado allegedly pulled a knife out. The victim said he could not see if the blade was extended but knew it was a knife Mercado was holding, the arrest report states.

The victim told the officer that Mercado began to walk toward him, acting in a manner in which he thought he would be stabbed. The victim became afraid when he said Mercado got into his face. He said Mercado then threw the knife to a group of friends that were watching, the arrest report states.

Mercado allegedly told the victim that he better not talk to the woman in question again or worse things would happen, the arrest report states. The victim said Mercado told him he had a shotgun with him and if he told anyone about what happened he would come looking for him, the arrest report states.

A witness who was with the victim during the altercation confirmed the pushing before the knife was pulled. The witness said when Mercado pulled the knife he told the victim “I’m going to jail tonight,” the arrest report states. The witness said he heard his friend say “No, I’m not going to fight you.”

Mercado then allegedly told the victim “Fight me or stop talking” to the woman, the arrest report states. The suspect then allegedly told the victim: “I’ll hunt you down if you tell anyone about this,” the witness told officers.

Mercado was found later by deputies who made a traffic stop. Officers inventoried the man’s truck prior to it being towed and found a shotgun inside a locked case. Officers also located a black folding knife under the rear passenger floor mat and a pipe with marijuana residue between the center seat and passenger seat. Mercado was arrested at 12:46 a.m. Monday and taken to jail.

In an interview, Mercado told officers he went to talk things over with the man at Mills Park. He first said they had a civil conversation. He denied any type of physical altercation. He then changed his story and said he and the victim got into a pushing match but didn’t fight. He said he did take the knife out of his pocket but never extended the blade. He said he took the knife out of his pocket and threw it to a friend so he would not have it on him if the two fought.

He admitted to an officer that he threatened the victim but was never going to carry out his threats, the arrest report states. He said he only said those things to scare the victim and had no intention to hurt him.
