Dry, mild conditions will continue Wednesday with a gradual cooling trend bringing the possibility of rain for Carson City and surrounding counties along with mountain snow by Saturday’s Nevada Day celebration, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Isolated light rain and snow showers are possible Thursday evening across the Sierra, lingering through Friday, with the potential of wetter valley conditions as the weather system moves into the region Saturday and Sunday, NWS forecasters said.
There’s a 20 to 35 percent chance of rain for Carson City on Saturday, with mountain snow above 7,000 feet. High temperatures in Carson City on Saturday, Nevada Day, will be in the mid 50s, according to NWS forecasters as of the time of this writing.
Forecasters do note there’s “plenty of uncertainty about the details with this system as the forecast has changed every single day this week with its evolution.”
NWS forecasters say a trough to the north is pulling into the low pressure system in the Eastern Pacific that could potentially lead to snow levels somewhere between 6,500 to 8,500 feet, trending higher early on Saturday and then lowering by Sunday morning as the moisture starts to exit the region. As of the time of this writing, there’s a 10 to 40 percent chance of snow amounts greater than one inch between 6,500 to 8,500 feet, and 30 to 50 percent chance of snow greater than 2 inches above 8,000 feet.
Another ridge appears to develop Sunday through mid-week next week until the next low pressure system arrives sometime late next week. Thus, drier and warmer conditions should return briefly, NWS forecasters say.
Here’s the weekend forecasts as of Wednesday morning for Carson City per the National Weather Service in Reno. As NWS forecasters said, this too could change. Folks headed to the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday should dress for the weather and bring umbrellas just in case.
