Carson City residents associated with the grassroots organization “Let Carson Vote” have filed a petition asking to amend the Carson City Charter.
If their petition receives roughly 4,700 signatures by the registered Carson City voters who voted in the 2025 General Election, then any installment-purchase agreement above $10 million proposed by the City will need to be approved by Carson City voters, rather than the Board of Supervisors.
According to the filing documents, the petition is not tied to any particular project, though “Let Carson Vote” was created in relation to the City Hall project. While last week it was announced that the proposed version of the project will not be moving forward, this petition seeks that any proposed agreement above a $10 million total cost be brought to the citizens of Carson City to approve.
We have reached out to the City for comment on the initiative, and we also requested information on how often $10 million+ agreements are proposed. We will have more on this initiative, and the city’s response, later this week.
“Let Carson Vote” issued the following explanation along with the petition documents:
INITIATIVE TO AMEND CARSON CITY CHARTER PURSUANT TO ARTICLE 19, SECTION 4 OF THE NEVADA CONSTITUTION, AND NEVADA REVISED STATUTES 268.010(2)(b)
Carson City, NV – Residents want to amend the Carson City charter to add a new section whereby any installment-purchase agreement that obligates the City to pay $10 million or more in the aggregate over the term of the agreement, and that is not otherwise subject to approval by the voters of Carson City, shall be presented to the voters of Carson City for their approval prior to becoming effective or binding upon the City.
No set of related installment-purchase agreements shall be broken up or proposed separately in order to evade the limitations or intent of this section. The Board of Supervisors shall direct the measure to be placed on the next primary or general election ballot, or direct the conduct of a special election, and it shall be accompanied by a clear, concise statement describing the proposed agreement and its cost, without argument or prejudice. The question posed to the voters shall be: “Shall the above described agreement be approved?”
LetCarsonVote is a bipartisan grassroots organization political action committee (PAC) to promote local government accountability and transparency on how public dollars are spent. Together, we can create an affordable quality life for future generations in Carson City.
