First responders and members of the community attended a ceremony Saturday morning at the Nevada Firefighters Memorial in Mills Park.

Four plaques, bearing the names of four firefighters who died in the line of duty this year in Nevada, were added to the memorial where they joined dozens of others who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to the state and their communities over the years.

The names of Justin Randall Beebe, Brent Cooper, Jacob O’Malley and Will Hawkins were added to the memorial Saturday morning in the presence of fellow firefighters and other first responders, families, friends and members of the Carson City community.

Beebe was a member of the United States Forest Service firefighting team. Cooper served in the North Las Vegas Fire Department. Hawkins and O’Malley worked for the Bureau of Land Management.

Saturday morning’s ceremony concluded a weeklong observance of National Fire Prevention Week in Nevada.

Its occurrence could not have been more timely as fire crews from across the region currently battle wildfires in Washoe Valley and South Lake Tahoe.

On Thursday, a fire started in South Carson City, threatening a mobile home park and the Stewart Indian Colony. But the hard work of firefighting crews and first responders saved residences and brought the fire under control.

Since its completion in 1994, the Nevada Firefighters Memorial has served as the official firefighter memorial in Nevada, honoring the Silver State’s fallen firefighters at a ceremony held each year in Carson City on the last Saturday of National Fire Prevention Week in October.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed the week of Oct. 9-15, 2016 as “Fire Prevention Week” in Nevada this year.
