Early fall storms will move into Carson City and surrounding counties this week with increasing winds, thunderstorms, showers and even some high mountain snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon with localized flash flooding possible, forecasters said. The potential for initial showers and thunderstorms, between 20 to 40 percent, include Southern Lyon and Mineral counties and northward into the Pine Nut Mountains and Virginia Range as well as Mono County in California.

Showers and thunderstorms Sunday will then likely expand or shift eastward into the Western Nevada Basin and Range through the afternoon before tapering off after sunset, NWS forecasters said.
For Western Nevada, most areas will remain dry Sunday, forecasters said, noting the Lake Tahoe Basin, greater Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno areas may see a stray afternoon shower or thunderstorm, especially if the system moves westward.
For Southern Lyon and Mineral counties, as well as Mono County in California, slower storm motions and abundant moisture will support isolated flash flooding Sunday, where odds are the greatest. Thunderstorms will be capable of gusty outflow winds, small hail and frequent lightning, forecasters said.

Monday afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible
Additional showers and thunderstorms are anticipated Monday afternoon with a few thunderstorms becoming strong to possibly severe, forecasters said.
The Western Nevada Basin and Range, east of Alt-95, has consistently been the area for thunderstorm development, forecasters said, however current weather models hint at the possibility of storms farther west across the Sierra and into far western Nevada ahead of a weak cold front.
“In any case, any thunderstorm that is able to mature and organize will likely be capable of marginally severe wind gusts and/or hail,” according to the weather service. “Additional showers, including light snow showers over highest Sierra peaks, or a stray thunderstorms storm will be possible Monday night from Lake Tahoe into northeast California where the cold front stalls.”
Winds will also be gusty Monday afternoon outside of thunderstorm influence, so be prepared for choppy waters on area lakes and impacts to travel, forecasters said.
Stormy weather, cooler temperatures continue Tuesday through Thursday
A second cold front will approach the region on Tuesday, maintaining shower chances, gusty winds and cool temperatures through midweek. Meanwhile, strong low pressure will bring additional showers and storms, gusty winds and cooler temperatures through midweek with unsettled conditions possibly continuing Friday into next weekend.
