About Dr. Karen Gedney

Dr. Karen Gedney is the author of 30 Years Behind Bars: Trials of a Prison Doctor. After medical school, she was assigned to the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, becoming the first woman doctor to serve at a men’s prison.

What began as a four-year obligation turned into a lifelong vocation, as she discovered the difference she could make by caring for and standing up for those most in need.

Her career gave her firsthand insight into the challenges of trauma, mental illness, and abuse of power — but also the possibilities of redemption, education, and compassion.

Since retiring, Dr. Gedney has dedicated herself to prison reform, mentoring youth, and working with organizations that bring education and hope behind prison walls. She continues to inspire through her writing, lectures, and advocacy, sharing a message of resilience, healing and positive change.
