Expected gusty winds and low humidity Saturday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Carson City and surrounding counties in western Nevada along the Sierra Front.
The warning extends from 11 a.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday for Carson City and Douglas, Lyon, Storey, southern Washoe and Mineral counties in Nevada and Alpine, southern Lassen and Mono counties in California.
NWS forecasters said winds will be out of the southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph and humidity 12 to 17 percent in the afternoon.
The combination of strong winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service urges people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
At the time of this writing, no zones remain under NV Energy’s Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) status at this time but may change. Go here for updates.
