The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning at 10:40 a.m. Sunday for southern Lyon County and the Lahontan Basin including Churchill and eastern Mineral counties in Nevada and Alpine and Mono counties in California.
Gusty winds from the southwest, 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. Humidity is expected to be between 5 to 15 percent across the area. The Red Flag warning runs now until 8 p.m. Sunday evening.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation such as yard work, target shooting or campfires. People should follow local fire restrictions.

Meanwhile, there’s a Lake Wind Advisory today for area lakes. Winds will be out of the southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph are expected this afternoon.
The gusty winds will create hazardous boating conditions for all local area lakes in the eastern Sierra, northeast California, and western Nevada, according to the weather service.
Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will created hazardous conditions for small craft, according to NWS forecasters. Boaters should consider postponing boating activities on lakes until a day with less wind.
