Beginning August 18, this coming 2026-2027 school year, students in the Carson City School District will not be permitted to wear or use smart glasses or other wearable electronic communication devices while on school campuses or during school-sponsored activities. This may include but is not limited to Google Glasses, Meta Ray-Ban glasses or similar devices from any manufacturer.
Nevada law requires school districts to establish policies governing student use of electronic communication devices. By eliminating smart glasses and other wearable technology, the school district intends to maintain a safe, focused learning environment while protecting the privacy of students and staff. Two years ago, the Carson City School District implemented cellphone pouches for all middle and high school students.
Similar to smartphones, smart glasses are capable of transmitting, recording, receiving and sharing audio, images, video and other electronic communications. Unlike traditional prescription eyewear or sunglasses, smart glasses can discreetly record conversations, capture photographs, livestream video and communicate with others, which has raised concerns about classroom distractions, academic integrity and personal privacy.
“Technology continues to evolve, and our educational practices must evolve with it,” Superintendent Andrew Feuling said. “This added precaution helps ensure our classrooms remain safe and respectful learning environments where students can focus on instruction without concerns about unauthorized recording or other distractions.”
Students who require assistive technology as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or documented medical need, will continue to receive appropriate accommodations consistent with district policy and state law.
Additional information regarding electronic communication device expectations and consequences for policy violations will be included in school student handbooks and behavior guidelines before the start of the school year.
