Hot weather will grip Carson City and surrounding counties this week, sending temperatures into the triple digits Wednesday through the weekend, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Watch.
Meanwhile, smoke and haze from ongoing regional wildfires will continue to be a factor, leading to periods of reduced air quality across the region. Visibility may be impacted, especially in northwestern Nevada. See AirNow.gov here for the latest air quality readings around the capital city.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, the heat will rapidly intensify as the upper ridge strengthens and shifts slightly eastward, NWS forecasters said. Western Nevada valleys will see widespread triple-digit temperatures return, with highs climbing into the 100-105 range.
Sierra and Lake Tahoe communities will also experience a warm-up as well, with highs reaching the low to mid 90s. Overnight lows will remain uncomfortably warm, generally in the 60s to low 70s for the valleys, and 50s to low 60s for the Sierra.

The prolonged heat has necessitated a Heat Advisory for Wednesday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch from Thursday morning through Sunday morning is for much of western Nevada, Carson City and surrounding counties and eastern California.
High temperatures across lower valleys will remain at or above triple digits through this weekend with highs generally 100-105, NWS forecasters said. Lake Tahoe and Sierra communities will see highs consistently in the low to mid 90s.
How Hot Will It Get?
For the Heat Advisory and the Extreme Heat Watch, highs 98 to 102 degrees with overnight lows between 60 to 70 degrees and probable. There will be Widespread Moderate HeatRisk with areas of Major HeatRisk in lower valleys, NWS forecasters said.
Heat-related illnesses will be more likely as the heat persists, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors, in poorly cooled indoor spaces, or who are sensitive to heat.
Beating The Heat
Never leave pets or children unattended in vehicles. The weather service advises people to maintain hydration by drinking plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks, drink plenty of fluid and get out of the sun and into cooler areas as much as possible.
