A 37-year-old Carson City man is facing felony burglary of a business after he woke up locked inside a local pharmacy. He was charged for taking a sweater off the rack — but he did pay for the Monster Energy drink he consumed while inside.
According to the arrest report, Tyler Schroeder was arrested just before 1:45 a.m. in the 1900 block of N. Carson Street after deputies were dispatched on a report of a burglary alarm to a local pharmacy.
Dispatch advised the alarm company that the business reported a subject inside the store “walking around.”
Deputies arrived on the scene and witnessed a man, later identified as Schroeder, inside the store. They wrote that when Schroeder saw one of the deputies, he turned and walked to the back of the store.
Deputies surrounded the store and reported that all of the doors were locked and secured. The supervisor of the store arrived on the scene and unlocked the door to provide entry.
Using the patrol vehicle’s speakers, deputies made a public announcement before beginning to manually clear the building. They located Schroeder within the men’s bathroom and handcuffed him.
Deputies then cleared the building to ensure no one else was inside, which there was not. Inside the bathroom, they located Schroeder’s belongings, including the blue sweater he was seen wearing by the alarm company, which was property of the pharmacy. The tag had been removed and was valued at $29.99.
Schroeder said he’d gone into the store the day before and fallen asleep in the bathroom. He said he did not know what time he’d entered the store, “but the sun was still up.”
He said he was very tired from working, and when he woke up, he noticed the store was closed, and he did not know what to do.
Deputies asked if he called 911 to report being locked inside the store, and he said he did not. He said he used his EBT card to purchase a Monster Energy drink, which was confirmed by the store. He said he was planning on purchasing the sweater he’d been wearing, but hadn’t done so yet.
However, he only had $7 in cash on him and no credit card, indicating he had no means to pay for the sweater. Deputies also noted he did not leave through an emergency exit door, of which there was one near the bathrooms where he’d been hiding.
Schroeder was arrested for burglary of a commercial business and petit larceny.
Bail: $20,000
— A 52-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for gross misdemeanor battery on a protected person and resisting arrest in addition to a misdemeanor warrant after being stopped for driving with a cover obscuring her license plate number.
According to the arrest report, Lavurne Elizabeth Jeffreys was stopped by SET detectives around 8 p.m. Thursday after the reporting detective was traveling on Northgate Lane and witnessed a vehicle driving on Northgate Lane with its license plate obscured.
The detective said the vehicle pulled to the side of the road then made a U-turn after the detective passed, so the detective did as well. The vehicle then went over the limit line at the intersection of Northgate and Hot Springs, and while in the right-hand turn lane, its left turn signal activated, and the driver made a left turn onto Hot Springs “cutting in front of me to make the illegal turn.”
At this point, the detective conducted a traffic stop. On making contact with Jeffreys, the detective wrote that she appeared to be “having a panic attack” and was trying to explain that she “has ‘police anxiety.’”
The detective said that they asked multiple times for Jeffreys to provide her driver’s license or identify herself. She provided multiple pill bottles with her name on them, but the detective said that they explained they “did not need her pill bottles, I needed her driver’s license.”
The detective conducted a records check and requested a second unit to their location. Dispatch advised that Jeffreys had a warrant for her arrest out of the Reno Police Department for Battery on a Protected Person. She explained she had just had oral surgery earlier that day and was trying to take medication at the time of contact.
After the warrant was confirmed, deputies asked her to step out of the vehicle as she was going to be placed under arrest. However, Jeffreys “attempted to stay in the vehicle after multiple commands for her to exit,” and in fear that she was “attempting to start the car to flee,” the detective grabbed onto her left arm and pulled her out of the vehicle.
The two deputies attempted to place handcuffs on Jeffreys, but she continued to pull away, and at one point while pulling away, she struck the detective in the forehead with her elbow, according to the report.
The detective wrote that “once I was struck in the head, [the Sergeant] and I used more force to place handcuffs on” Jeffreys.
She was escorted to the patrol vehicle and transported to the jail to be booked on her charges, and the vehicle was towed.
Bail: $7,000
— A 52-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for possession of drugs and paraphernalia following a traffic stop for suspended registration.
According to the arrest report, the driver advised she did not have a driver’s license or insurance but was able to provide the deputy with the vehicle’s registration slip.
The reporting deputy noted that she was “fidgety” and displayed bruxism (jaw grinding) and they asked about the presence of drugs. She said that there were no drugs in the vehicle but also added she didn’t know what was in the vehicle because it did not belong to her.
The deputy said they asked if they could search the vehicle, and she declined. They said when they would ask about drugs, she would “look at and mess with her purse.”
Deputies asked her to exit the vehicle, and she did so but locked the doors “as soon as she got out.”
Deputy K-9 Cash was dispatched to the scene, who conducted an exterior vehicle sniff and provided a positive alert on the passenger side of the vehicle where the woman’s purse was.
Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located a black case inside her purse containing a “bag of methamphetamine” according to the report, which weighed approximately 0.44 grams. They also located a glass pipe and another baggie within her purse that contained “meth residue” inside it.
They searched the rest of the car and did not locate anything else, and it was released to the registered owner.
