Ildemaro Vargas is known for his defensive prowess, but his recent power display could lead to an increased role with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The switch-hitting infielder has shown glimpses of raw power during the Dbacks’ Summer Camp scrimmages. As the starting designated hitter in Monday’s 12-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, he homered off pitcher Julio Urias to deep left field that nearly left Dodger Stadium in the second inning.

Vargas’ deep blast has been a culmination of offensive improvements at the plate. He’s added muscle to his 6-foot, 180-pound frame this offseason, and it has translated to some untapped power to all fields. If his hot streak carries over into the regular season, it could bode well to his major league future.
