The Moon reaches First Quarter over Carson City early Tuesday morning, then continues waxing toward the July 29 Full Moon. That means the week grows brighter night by night, making faint deep-sky viewing more difficult than it was around last week’s New Moon. The Moon itself, however, is a good target through binoculars or a small telescope, especially along the line between lunar light and shadow where craters and ridges stand out more sharply.

After sunset, Venus remains the easiest planet to find, bright in the western sky as twilight fades. Jupiter is much harder now, sinking into the glow of dusk as it heads toward conjunction with the Sun near the end of the month. For casual viewing around Carson City, look west soon after sunset for Venus, then let your eyes move higher as the Summer Triangle — Vega, Deneb and Altair — becomes easier to pick out overhead.

Before dawn, Mars is visible in the east and Saturn is higher and brighter, with Saturn becoming a rewarding telescope target later in July because its rings appear unusually thin from Earth’s point of view.
