It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Marena L Works. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 9, 2026, in her home in Carson City, NV, surrounded by her family.

Marena was born on January 25, 1959, in Santa Monica, California to Jeanne and Anthony Macera, the youngest of 9 children. She grew up in the LA area where, as a teen, she developed a passion for horses and competed in Hunter/Jumper.

She eventually moved to Carson City, Nevada where she worked as a vet tech at Sierra Veterinary Hospital and met Roger. They were married on October 10, 1982, in Genoa, Nevada and had 4 children, Larissa, Danny, Hannah and Christy.

Marena graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with her BSN in 1995. She worked as a nurse including in hospice care until she became a school nurse with the Carson City School District. She primarily worked at Carson High School and later became Chief Nurse for the district. She obtained her dual master’s in nursing and in Public Health from UNR and moved on to become the Director at Carson City Health and Human Services. During her time there she was a strong advocate for public health in Carson City and rural Nevada. She continued her public health career through multiple agencies until her retirement.

Marena was a force to be reckoned with and will be forever remembered as not only an advocate for a healthier Nevada but also as a loving mother and treasured role model for all her family. She had a fierce love for Jesus and when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, she continued to lay her trust in God who carried her through another 14 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jeanne Macera and Anthony Macera Sr. and her sister Dona.

She is survived by her husband, Roger D Works Jr., four children Larissa Ely, Daniel Works, Hannah Rodriguez, and Christina Kurnik, seven grandchildren Mackenzie Rodriguez, Elizabeth Works, Kilian Kurnik, Corbin Rodriguez, Abigail Works, Chloe Works and Isabelle Kurnik and her siblings Carol Macera, Anthony Macera Jr, Elizabeth Macera, Monica Macera, Jennifer Breiman, Joseph Macera, and Marc Macera.
