Your body keeps its own kind of memory. Long after your mind has moved past something, your shoulders may still brace, your breath could still catch, and you might not even know why. That’s not a flaw. That’s what trauma-informed yoga works with directly.

The What

It’s yoga, but it’s built around safety and choice instead of performance. You won’t hear “fix your alignment” or “push deeper.” You’ll hear invitations instead, things like “you’re invited to notice what you are feeling right now,” or “feel free to take a shape that feels right for you.” There are no hands-on adjustments. You decide how much you do, when you rest, and when a pose just isn’t for you today. Nothing about it requires flexibility or yoga experience. This type of yoga invites you to show up and pay attention to what’s actually there.

The Why

A lot of what brings people into my office — overwhelming stress, addictive behaviors, emotional swings, and grief — isn’t only happening in someone’s head. It’s happening in their body, too. Talk therapy can be helpful, but sometimes you can understand something completely and still feel stuck in your body’s old patterns. Trauma-informed yoga gives that understanding somewhere else to land. It’s a chance to actually practice feeling safe, instead of just talking about what safety should feel like.

The How

I work with people one-on-one, shaping sessions around whatever your nervous system needs that week. I also teach group classes right here in Carson City at Grassroots Yoga & Fitness Center at 195 E. Winnie Lane, where the room is built for beginners, bad days, everyone and everything in between.

The When

My next group class is Friday, July 31 at 5:30pm. Registration details can be found here.

The Who

Come to the July 31st class, or just message me with a question first. My name is Shannon Kossick, and I’m a Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). There’s no version of this where you have to have it all figured out before you show up.
