The Carson City Historical Society has extended the deadline for its America250 “What America Means to Carson City” Student Essay Contest to Friday, July 31, 2026, giving local students more time to share their thoughts, creativity, and love of community while competing for cash prizes.

Open to students in grades 4–12, the contest invites young writers to reflect on what America means to them and how those values are reflected in Carson City.

Essays will be judged in three age categories, with cash prizes awarded to the top entries:

  • Grades 4–6: $50
  • Grades 7–8: $75
  • Grades 9–12: $100

Winning essays will be announced and read aloud during the Carson City Historical Society’s annual Ice Cream Social at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, at the historic Foreman-Roberts House Museum.

“I know it’s summer. The kids are sleeping in, vacations are calling, and trust me—I’d rather be eating ice cream than asking for favors! But I really do need your help,” said Liz Cain, President of the Carson City Historical Society. “This isn’t homework; it’s a chance for students to share what America means to them, celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday, and maybe even win some cash. Please help us spread the word. Somewhere out there is Carson City’s next great storyteller, and we’d love to hear their voice.”

Parents, grandparents, teachers, homeschool families, youth organizations, and community members are encouraged to share this opportunity with the young people in their lives.

Essays may be submitted by email to carsoncityhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or mailed to:

Complete contest rules, entry guidelines, and submission information are available at CCHistorical.org.

The Carson City Historical Society hopes the extended deadline will give more students the opportunity to participate in this special America250 celebration and share their unique voices as our nation marks its 250th birthday.
