Throughout the year, Carson City has encountered emails with falsified documents and deceptive invoices intended to defraud residents out of their hard-earned money.

In these emails, individuals pose as members of the City’s staff, attaching fraudulent invoices and urging residents to wire funds to a bank account, all under the guise of legitimate transactions. The City does not ask for wire transfers.

Oftentimes, scammers use pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency and make their claims more convincing. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and skeptical to protect themselves from these cunning scams. City phone numbers are listed on carson.org, and the public is encouraged to call if they are unsure if an invoice is legitimate.

Community Development Director Hope Sullivan said, “We will never ask anyone to wire funds to an account. The invoices are fraudulent.  If you are uncertain as to the legitimacy of an invoice, please call the office at 775-887-2180.”
