A 37-year-old Las Vegas man was killed in a road racing accident in Storey County on Saturday.

Alexander Djordjevic died at the scene after he lost control of his Porsche 911 during a sanctioned road racing event north of the Storey and Lyon county lines, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The 5.2-mile stretch of the two-lane highway had been closed to the public for two days between 8 a.m and 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday to facilitate a sanctioned road racing event, according to an NHP press statement.

At about 4:50 p.m., a silver 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, driven by Djordjevic, had been traveling north bound at an extremely high rate of speed.

He approached a curve in the roadway too fast, applied the brakes and lost control of his vehicle as it departed the highway.  His vehicle traveled down an embankment and rolled over before coming to rest on its wheels, according to the press statement.

Djordjevic died at the scene from his injuries. Due to the fact that the highway was closed to the public at the time of this event, NHP will take an incident report as opposed to an accident report, according to the press statement.

The event will be completely and thoroughly investigated and reported just like any other fatality crash; however, this particular fatality will not be counted as a highway-related death, according to the NHP statement.

Race officials had secured a special use permit from the Nevada Department of Transportation that had also been coordinated and approved by the Lyon and Storey County officials, according to NHP.

The actual course included the stretch of highway between the junction of State Routes 341 and 342 to an area just south of the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.
