Now through August 14, the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Need program is requesting donations to help students experiencing homelessness have access to safe summer programming through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.
Donations will directly support student program fees and access to summer care and enrichment opportunities.
Caring and compassionate community members and businesses are encouraged to donate checks in $50 increments. A $50 donation will support one student’s fees, a $100 donation will support two students, a $250 donation will support multiple students and a $500 donation will earn the generous contributor the title of “Community Champion Sponsor.”

“Every child deserves a safe, supportive place to learn, grow and thrive during the summer months,” said Hannah Etchison, special projects coordinator and liaison for McKinney-Vento and Foster Care with the Carson City School District.” For students and families experiencing homelessness, access to quality summer programming can make a meaningful difference. We are grateful for the generosity of our community and business partners who continue to step forward and help remove barriers for our students. Together, we can ensure every child has opportunities to stay engaged, connected and successful throughout the summer.”
McKinney-Vento students often live in motels, hotels, trailer parks or campgrounds due to lack of alternative accommodations. Other primary nighttime residence may be a designated public space not designed for regular sleeping such as cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations or similar settings. McKinney-Vento students may also include migratory children or unaccompanied youth who are not in physical custody of a parent or guardian.
The school’s McKinney-Vento program helps homeless students receive an appropriate public education as well as the following services provided.
- Enrollment in school immediately, even if students and families are lacking documents or if the student’s situation changes
- Transportation to and from school, if needed
- Free school meals
- Referrals to outside resources
- Support with school supplies, school fees or sports fees
- Academic tracking and interventions
- Assistance in obtaining required documents such as birth certificates
- Removal of other barriers that may impact educational progress
- Scholarships and help with graduation needs
- Summer programs
Donated checks may be mailed or dropped off to Carson City School District McKinney-Vento, 618 W. Musser Street, Carson City, Nevada 89703. Donation receipts are also available upon request. For more information, please contact Hannah Etchison, 775-283-1537, hetchison@carson.k12.nv.us.
